TSTC summer camps in full swing
Written by Brian McCormack

Texas State Technical College (TSTC), has been offering young adults one of a kind learning experiences via its summer camp program. The next two camps slated to be held at the Sweetwater TSTC location are the Ag Tech and Solar Technology Camps.
According to Joni Coons, camp coordinator, the Ag Tech camp will be a five-day, four-night experience. The camp will begin at 9 a.m. on July 13 and end on July 17. Participants will spend time at a local ranch where they will learn how to integrate modern innovation with the time honored occupations of ranching and farming.
Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and Geographical Information Systems (GIS), are some of the equipment the students will learn how to utilize firsthand. "We're taking agriculture into the future by taking the latest technology to the agricultural field," Coons said.
Solar energy is the theme of the other camp TSTC Sweetwater will be hosting. The two-day camp is not an overnight camp, it will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. on July 14-15.
Participants in the Get Smart With Solar Technology camp will learn the basics of how a solar cell works within a system. Demonstrations of working solar cells, and how they could play a key role in the future of energy production are the highlights of the camp.
According to Coons, in addition to learning about solar power, the campers will also learn about energy conservation and how to monitor their energy efficiency.
Both camps are offered free of charge, but space is limited. Students ages 14-21 who are interested in applying can go to www.westtexas.tstc.edu and fill out an online application. For more information contact Joni Coons at (325) 235-7418.
