The Sweetwater Little Theatre is set to present their second production of the summer, “Godspell,” Aug. 13-15 at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium. The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets will be available at the door staring at 7:30.
“Godspell” is a 1970s musical written by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak, based on the Gospel of Matthew with some additions from the Gospel of Luke. Well-known parables, such as the story of the Good Samaritan, the story of Lazarus and the rich man and the story of the prodigal son, are used to tell the story of Christ and explain the tenets of the Christian faith in a unique way. Some of the main characters include Jesus, John the Baptist and Judas Iscariot. Music in the play includes lyrics from well-known hymns. One of the songs from the original cast album, “Day by Day,” reached #13 on the Billboard pop singles chart in the summer of 1972. This song was later covered by the popular Christian rock band, dc Talk, on their 1995 album, “Jesus Freak.” According to a Wikipedia article, the production started out as a project performed by students at Carnegie Mellon University. It was then re-scored and performed off-Broadway where it had long-running success. The film version came out in 1973. Tickets for the Sweetwater show are $5 each, and groups of 10 or more can purchase tickets for half price for Thursday’s show. |
