Masons to host luncheon benefitting WTCAC |

According to Prevent Child Abuse America, it is estimated that the direct cost of child abuse in the United States is $33,101,302,133 annually. It is estimated that the indirect cost of child abuse in the United States is $70,652,715,359 annually. However, the cost of losing even one child to child abuse can not be calculated.
According to Anita Baker, West Texas Children's Advocacy Center Executive Director, 162 children were interviewed by WTCAC for fiscal year 2009. First time services were provided to 273 children by WTCAC and a total of 486 area children were helped by WTCAC.
The Sweetwater Masons saw a need in the WTCAC, and wanted to help contribute to the cause. From 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, the Sweetwater Masonic Lodge #571, located at 324 Oak Street, will have a beans and brisket luncheon benefitting WTCAC. Tickets are $8 and will be available at the door. Take-out service will also be available. "We thought that this would be a good way to get the community involved in giving back to a cause that is needed in the area," said Mason Tim Fambrough.
The Masons hosted a benefit in March 2009, and presented a check to the West Texas Children's Advocacy Center in the amount of $2,500.
The WTCAC serves children in Nolan, Scurry, Mitchell, Fisher and Borden Counties that are suspected victims of physical or sexual abuse or witnesses to violent crime. West Texas Children's Advocacy Center, which opened its doors in 2000, was established to address the unique needs of child abuse victims. The center was designed to be child-friendly and to help children feel safe and protected during what can be one of the most difficult times in their young lives. The center also houses and/or works with representatives from child protective services, law enforcement, prosecution, counseling services and medical professionals with the goal of bringing a team approach to child abuse investigations, prosecutions and intervention services.
The WTCAC currently relies on private donations to help fund almost 20% of their organizational budget. Such dollars help provide services such as forensic interviews, victim advocacy, counseling and court preparation/accompaniment, to young victims.
“We are very appreciative of all the support from the Masons and area residents who contribute to the WTCAC. It is one of the reasons we are able to continue to do what we do and serve area children,” said Davidson.
