Being Healthy and Having Fun. The Texas State Technical College Health Fair is in it's 18th year. The health fair was started in 1991 and has continued to serve the students and people of the Sweetwater community.
Glenda Williams started this health fair for the students and it has grown gradually. In the beginning there was only about eight to ten people involved. This year the Health Fair will be on Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The fair has grown and now includes 45 venders and on average and 200 to 300 participants from all over Nolan County. "It's great to have all these health care professionals volunteering their time to educate the people of Nolan County on these issues," Joni Coons, TSTC Wellness Coordinator said. During the Health Fair free screenings are provided. People can stop in and check their temperature, pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, body mass index, blood sugar, cholesterol, PSA, and Glaucoma/Vision. They also have a booth to donate blood and receive a free HIV test. "We have all these people offering free information and screenings, and it's more important this year than ever before," Coons said. Door prizes are drawn every 15 minutes. This year participating venders include: Abilene Eye Institute, American Cancer Society, Big Country Aids Resources, City and Rural Rides, Care Improvement Plus, Clyde Health Care Center, Cogdell Memorial Hospital, Deaf Action Center, Encompass Home Health, Food Bank of West Central Texas, Gateway Family Services, Girling Home Health, Healthy Freedom, Hendrick Cancer Center, Hendrick Hospice Care, Hendrick Medical Supply, High Sky Children's Ranch, Juice Plus, Kelly Service, Kool Smile Abilene, KXOX, Little Lives, Med Care Medical Supply of North Texas, Inc., Medical Response Corp., Meek Blood Bank, Nolan County Health Dept, Outreach Health Services- WIC, Preventive Blindness, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, Rolling Plains Rural Health Clinic, Southwest Therapy Associates, Sweetwater Fire/EMS, Texas Dept of Aging and Disability, Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Health Steps, Texas State Veterans home, The Medicine Place, TSTC Counseling and Testing, TSTC Health Information Technology, West Central COG- 911, West Central COG- CHIP, West Texas Child Advocacy Center, Mary Kay, Sweetwater Health Care.
