Sweetwater welcomes new family physician |

Dr. Maria Teresa Toro is the newest family physician at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Toro was born in Connecticut, but was raised in Colombia. She completed her schooling in Colombia, in 2000, and moved to the United States in 2003.
She took her tests and was accepted to the program at Texas Tech University. She did her residency, for one year, at Texas Tech. The past two years, she has been in Abilene.
"It was the need to help people that lead me to this profession," Dr. Toro said.
The best treatment is prevention. It's easier to teach them prevention instead of having to treat them while they are in the hospital.
"I'm really interested in educating people, especially young girls," Toro said. "Living healthy is important and it's important to help prevent teen pregnancies."
Dr. Toro provides family care and is qualified in obstetrics. She can deliver babies and perform C-sections, if needed.
"I'm happy to be here. The people in the community have been really friendly and helpful," Toro said.
She is currently taking new patients and will start her practice on Monday. She also speaks Spanish.
"The opportunity presented itself and everything has seemed to work itself out," Toro said. "It looks like this is where I am supposed to be."
