What to get for Christmas? A major question that everyone faces as the holidays approach. The Sweetwater Wild West Trade Days is hoping to provide the answer.
Gilbert Lopez is the general manager of the Trade Days and is looking to bring this event to the Sweetwater community on a regular basis. "We've been talking about this for about a year," Lopez said. "We are hoping that it will continue to grow and eventually be a big event, like the one that used to be in Post." The Trade Days are scheduled for the first weekend of every month starting in December. The Trade Days will run Friday through Sunday, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Vendors will be allowed to set up on Thursday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. and doors will open an hour early for them, Friday through Sunday. "We are hoping that this is one more thing to bring people to Sweetwater," Lopez said. "Anything that brings people to Sweetwater will benefit the community." Lopez said that not only is he looking for this event to bring revenue to his business, but to numerous other local businesses in the community. "Even if people are coming to town for the Trade Days, they are most likely going to spend money at the restaurants, hotels and other stores in town," Lopez said. "This will hopefully give the economy a good boost." Trade Days will be in the Old Walls building, off the interstate. There is about 30,000 square feet that can be used for vending space. There are even spaces available outside for food vendors. "We have about 10 spaces that are for food vendors," Lopez said. "We just installed electrical boxes outside so that the food vendors can have electricity." There is one food vendor signed up for the event and many more are encouraged to come out. The vending spaces vary in size. There are 10 x 8 and 8 x 8 spaces, but can be combined to fit anyone's space needs. "So far we have Mexican pottery, iron works, T-shirts, and numerous other items," Lopez said. "I'm not placing restrictions on what they can and can't sell. The only thing we won't allow are guns and knives." About 50 vendors have signed on for the first weekend of Trade Days. Vendors will be allowed to leave their items set up, instead of having to take them down at the end of the Trade Days, if they so choose. According to Lopez, most of the vendors are planning on keeping a permanent booth. "We are hoping to continue to draw enough people and continue to grow," Lopez said. On top of venders, there will also be an eating area set up for people to sit and eat at or simply take a rest from their shopping. "This is planned as a family event that is going to be fun," Lopez said. "We are wanting to give people something that gets them out and lets them have a good time. They can laugh, talk and shop, at the same time." To find out more information on booth space contact Gilbert Lopez at the office 235-2227 or his cell phone 325-721-2874. |
