Peter M. Lopez has announced his intent to file for the office of county judge. He is a local attorney who has practiced law in Sweetwater and the surrounding area for almost 10 years. He is excited about the prospect of becoming involved in local government.
"I have lived in Nolan County most of my life. I was born and raised here, and this is where I have chosen to raise my family," Lopez said. He graduated from Roscoe High School in 1992, and continued his education at Southwestern University in Georgetown. He graduated from Southwestern University in 1996 and furthered his education at Texas Tech University School of Law. He received his law degree in 1999. After receiving his law degree, Lopez moved back to Sweetwater. Since he has been practicing law, he has found an interest in the local government and has decided to take the next step. Lopez said that his legal experience will bring a new perspective to the County Judge's Office. "I think having an attorney in the office would be beneficial," Lopez said. "Being a lawyer is not required for the county judge position, but the court still has jurisdiction in all probate matters, among other things." One of the benefits that Lopez mentioned, of a lawyer being in the county judge seat, is the possibility of preventing cases from being transferred from county court to other courts. "I think Nolan County is at a key point in its history and what we do and how we adapt over the next few years will determine what will become of our county," Lopez said. There are many untapped resources in the Nolan County area, according to Lopez. Looking at the changes that have come to Sweetwater, Lopez said that this area is on a potential economic and technological breakthrough. "I think that I am young enough to know a fair amount of technology, and I don't think that we've tapped into all the new technology yet," Lopez said. "I want to be part of ushering it in. I think a new and young perspective can only benefit our county." Lopez is married to Lorin Lopez. She graduated from Munday High School and Belmont University, in Nashville. She is the Children's Pastor at Emmanuel Fellowship Church and teaches at Cornerstone Christian Preschool. They have a daughter, Libby. The family is an active member of Emmanuel Fellowship Church. Lorin sings in the EFC's Advent Choir and Peter leads a Wednesday night Bible study. He also publishes the Bible blog www.beautyofthebible.com. This blog has been ranked among the top 10-15 Biblical studies blogs online. |
