Java Jax will host a music seminar, by Texas recording artist Tony Barker, on Feb. 6, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. He’s played on stages from California to Cozumel, Oklahoma to Austin, and on Terrestrial and Internet Radio Stations throughout Texas (including the KXOX program “Planet Texas”). Now his thirty-something years of experience and expertise will be available to Sweetwater musicians and songwriters. Along with specific guitar techniques and concepts, the “performance” aspect of the seminar will include:
Proven Stage Fright remedies --adding “sizzle” to the songs you already know -- getting more out of your rehearsal time --vocal techniques that will immediately improve your singing --how to avoid common “show killers” -- basic sound system advice and much more. The event is designed for student-level musicians and performers that want more “stage presence”, but even more experienced players will find that by re-visiting these fundamentals, some things may get better, some things may get easier, and most things will last longer. “There are no shortcuts in the Music Business,” says Barker, “but that doesn’t mean that you have to wander around with no direction.” Tony Barker-Musician His first CD “All In” earned him a nomination as the Singer/Songwriter of the Year by the Academy of Texas Music, and he was voted Musician of the Year and Entertainer of the Year by readers of a West Texas publication (The Blues and Rock Gazette.) He’s just announced the release of his first DVD “Live Shots,” and will soon return to the studio to record “And They Dance,” the first single of his sophomore CD “All Out.” He co-hosts the Tony Barker and Meatball Acoustic Jam, in Abilene, giving many performers their first stage experience, and providing a networking opportunity that has produced many local and regional bands. Tony Barker-Teacher More than just an outstanding performer, Mr. Barker brings serious teaching credentials to the table: He’s taught first aid and adult CPR for the American Red Cross, martial arts at Dyess A.F.B., forklift operation for Caterpillar, heavy equipment and vehicle operations in the USAF, and respiratory protection for the 3M Corporation. Making sure that the presentation stays upbeat and fun, he will draw on his experience as a Standup Comedian and radio morning show personality. Immediately following the seminar, participants and the public are invited to a “Songwriters and Sirloin” music series concert featuring Tony Barker. Steak dinner at 6:30 and concert at 7:30. Cost of the Tony Barker Guitar and Performance Clinic is $25 and the Sirloin and Songwriter concert event is $16,if you only want to attend the show it is $10.
