Written by Staff Reports
Tuesday, 02 February 2010
The Sweetwater High School Auditorium was packed with stars and their fans on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at the Sweetwater Kiwanis 2010 Star Search finals.
Matt Graff, master of ceremonies for the evening, began the show by introducing Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham to lead the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance. Graff then introduced one of last year's Star Search winners, Kevin Thompson, to lead the crowd in "Proud to be an American."
Then began the elementary division of the Star Search competition. Starting off was the “East Ridge Hoedown” dancing group from East Ridge Elementary School including Kyla Daniel, Elli Lehnert, Isabel Ortega, Mia Valdez, Jazel Villa and Marissa Villanueva. Next up was Olivia Madden from Southeast Elementary singing “The Rose.” Collin Stafford from East Ridge Elementary followed, performing a dancing number called, “Village People.” Riley Dodd of Southeast Elementary continued with the competition, dancing to “Magic Carpet Ride.”  Next came the “Bad Girlz” dancing group from East Ridge Elementary including Alicia Gomez, Kara Lehnert, Heaven Martinez, Cyera Pieper and Josie Sanchez. They danced to "Bad" by Michael Jackson. Caleb H. Sermons of Southeast Elementary followed, singing, “My Wish.” Next up was Kolbi Turner of  East Ridge Elementary singing, “Delta Dawn.” Bonnie Anglin and Kenley Reed of Southeast Elementary danced to “Ice Cream Freeze.” Kyrsten Smith of East Ridge Elementary went next — with her grandpa, Skeet Smith on acoustic guitar — singing “Silent Night.” Cassiah Castro and Meghann Olguin of Southeast Elementary danced to “Just Dance.” Thomas Hernandez of East Ridge Elementary then performed “The Smooth Hula Hooper,” hula hooping to "Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson. Bianca Bohall of Southeast Elementary finished up the elementary division singing “The Climb.”
In the intermediate division Devin Gutierrez began by singing, “Amazing Grace.” John Clift  and Colter Reed, “The Patriots,” were next performing on guitar the National Anthem. Daniela Loeza went next dancing to “El Son de la Negra.” Justin Allen sang and played guitar to, “Come Together.” Lindsey Romero and Ainsleigh Nelson, the “Texas Twins,” danced to "Party in the USA." Veronica Caballero finished up the intermediate division by singing, “Love Story.”
An intermission was held before beginning the middle school division. Steven Le began the division performing “Crazy Train,” on guitar. Next was Marissa Moncada singing “Love Story.” Allison Winslett followed, singing, “You Belong With Me.” Crysten Ivy went next singing “Bubbly.” Next was Mikeilah Foust singing, “Every Time You Lie.” Brook Sutton finished the middle school division singing, “New Strings.”
Last but not least was the high school division. Beginning the division was Erica Rea singing, “With Me.” Following Rea was JJ Juarez singing, “I Want to Know What Love Is.” Michallah McKinney followed singing, “Crazy.” Carlee Harrell continued singing, “When You Believe.” Angela Virgen went next performing an original song on vocals and guitar called "Back to Bed." A band performance by Cole Rhoades, Shelby Scott, Matt Reeser, Jodie May and Jaci Shelton, collectively known as Falling Before Christ (FBC), finished up the high school competition performing “Never Alone.”
As judged deliberated, the audience was entertained by winners of last year's star search including Laney Wallace, Annaliese Espinoza and Isabella Peña. Also performing was Texas recording artist Tony Barker of Abilene, playing an instrumental song and bringing volunteers to the stage to sing along on another song.
