Sweetwater High School brought home its second straight Class 3A regional title this past weekend at the TTCA team tournament in Odessa.
SHS began the tourna-ment with a 19-0 win over Pecos in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon and came back to knock off Levelland in the semifinals Saturday morning before winning the regional title with a 10-5 victory over Snyder that afternoon. Sweetwater now advances to the TTCA state tournament that will be played in San Marcos starting Friday. Sweetwater will have two matches Friday and Satur-day at the tournament. As regional champion, Sweetwater plays a regional runnerup in the first round of the 16-team tournament. Doubles winners against Levelland were Hanna Hunter-Jessica Bond (No. 1 girls), Caitlin Moses-Jenny Ordway (No. 3 girls), Kevin Ludlum-Madison Meneses (No. 1 mixed) and Michael Foust-Aaron Shipp (No. 3 boys). Singles winners were Aaron Ortiz (No. 2 boys), Chris Hernandez (No. 3 boys), Brice Carrion (No. 4 boys), Hanna Hunter (No. 1 girls), Allie Myers (No. 2 girls) and Jessica Bond (No. 3 girls). Sweetwater’s doubles winners in the regional final vs. Snyder were Hunter-Bond (No. 1 girls), Myers-Dugan Thompson (No. 2 girls), Ludlum-Meneses (No. 1 mixed), Cameron Dahar-Carrion (No. 1 boys) and Shipp-Foust (No. 3 boys). Singles winners were Myers (No. 2 girls), Bond (No. 3 girls), Moses (No. 4 girls), Dahar (No. 1 boys) and Carrion (No. 4 boys). Myers had the clinching win against Snyder with an 11-9 third set victory, while in No. 1 girls doubles the team of Hunter-Bond overcame a 3-7 deficit to win 9-8, one of the best come-backs coach Adam Cherry said he has seen. Carrion (No. 4 boys singles) had the clinching win vs. Levelland. |
