Sweetwater Backpack Buddies officially began last week for 30 Sweetwater ISD students. Sweetwater Backpack Buddies is a local non-profit group that is dedicated to providing healthy food for children that have been identified as "chronically hungry" by SISD staff and administration.
Thirty students were given a bag of nutritious food Friday afternoon and this will continue each Friday. This group provides the food free of cost to the child or its family. The Sweetwater Backpack Buddies is associated with the national Backpacks for Kids program through the Food Bank of West Central Texas and the national program of Feeding America. The local group will purchase the food for the children from the Food Bank of West Central Texas at an approximate cost of $162 per student served per school year. Sweetwater Backpack Buddies is a local group of concerned parents and citizens organized by Leah and Alaina Andrews. Pictured are some of the volunteers who packed the food this week. Those who are interested in donating to this non-profit organization, contact Leah Andrews at 338-2384 or Kathy Smartt at 235-8601. All donations to this program are fully tax deductible. |
