New year, new faces, new principals. Sweetwater High School students will be coming back to new faces this coming semester. Former high school principal Chris Wiggington will not be returning this year and Stacy Jones will be taking his place. Jones has been in the education system for more than 10 years. He has served as principal on the high school level for the past seven years.
"I always knew I wanted to be a coach, but administration is something that I just got into." Jones said. Jones received his Bachelor of Science degree and Masters of Science degree from Angelo State University. He majored in kinesiology and minored in mid-management and English, while receiving his teacher certification. He received his mid-management certification through UTPB in May 2001. Right after he received his degree from Angelo State University he began teaching at Bastrop. Jones has experienced the education system from the perspective of a math teacher, physical education and health teacher and a coach. His career has taken him to Bastrop, Florence, Lampasas, Midland, Crane and Odessa. "When you're in the classroom, you have a chance to influence your class," Jones said. "When you're in administration, you have the chance to influence so many more people. You influence all the students, the teachers and the staff." One important thing is to make sure that the kids know where they stand, compared to other schools and the state, according to Jones. When it comes to the TAKS scores, he said that they aren't where they need to be, but he hopes to work with the teachers and students to get them there. "I'm looking forward to not only working with the teachers, but the entire staff and students on collaborating and finding a plan that works best for the kids," Jones said. There are a few goals that Jones has in mind for the school, but for the most part he wants the staff to work together and develop the goals together. Being a recognized school, improving the quality of the teaching and learning of the students, and making sure that the parents and community are involved in the school and it's success, are some of the common goals that he thinks all the teachers will share. "I'm a hard working, dependable person and I want to make an impact," Jones said. "Not only at school, but in the community as well." Before coming to Sweetwater, Jones and his family were volunteers with the special Olympics. They believed that everyone should have the chance to be recognized. "It's a great way for them to get recognized, compete and be involved outside of school," Jones said. "I'm not sure what exactly we will be getting into here, but we definitely will be getting into something for the community." |
