Local residents are invited to a reception welcoming the Texas High School Rodeo Associa-tion (THSRA) to the Nolan County Coliseum this Saturday, Oct. 13, from 2:30-3:30 pm. Sweetwater is competing to host the Region 2 finals in April 2008 and beyond, and a strong showing of support from area residents will be very important for the city in its efforts to attract this event on a permanent basis, said Mayor Greg Wortham. “I hope that community leaders, business leaders, and interested members of the public will come out on Saturday,” he said. The Region 2 high school rodeo action kicks off immediately after the reception in the indoor coliseum and the outdoor covered arena. There is no charge for either the reception or the rodeo, and the public is welcome.
The Region 2 rodeo starts Friday, Oct. 12, and continues on Saturday and Sunday. In addition to the high school competition, there are also junior high (wrangler) and younger competitors. There are more than 140 students from almost 70 high schools in western Texas and eastern New Mexico who compete in THSRA Region 2, which hosts 15 regional rodeos across West Texas during each school year. Sweetwater is competing with Andrews for the right to host the 2008 regional finals. Statewide, the THSRA has over 2,500 students competitors involved in more than 100 rodeos around the state. The state finals are held in Abilene each spring. This weekend also represents the Sweetwater debut of the West Texas Wind Energy Rodeo Team at the THSRA event. Three students are being sponsored this year so far by the wind industry, and wind industry companies and other area businesses are invited to explore sponsorship opportunities to assist the THSRA by either sponsoring individual riders or with contributions to the group as a whole. “These sponsorships help the individual students, help spread information about the wind industry, and will help to attract the regional finals to Sweetwater,” said Wortham, who is also executive director of the West Texas Wind Energy Consortium, whose boundaries cover THSRA Region 2. West Texas Wind Energy Rodeo is the event sponsor and saddle sponsor of breakaway roping, pole bending, and barrel racing. Members of the West Texas Wind Energy Rodeo team this school year are Hannah Holland of Rotan, Kady Knox of Big Spring, and Ramzi Messick of Colorado High School. The sponsorships are funded by designated private gifts to WTWEC.

Every year we would all come together at my grandmother McFaul-Coplen's home in Roscoe. She is no longer with us, but my family now celebrates Thankgiving in my home. My parents, brothers, and their families all bring a dish. I wanted to carry on what my grandmother started, and love and miss all my family in Sweetwater and Roscoe. - Tracey Flake (Early, Texas)
Last year I had chosen my fall leaf garland with gold candles however, at the last minute I had to redecorate with my snowman collection due to the 5-6 inches of snow we accumulated! - Kandy Myers (Sweetwater, TX)
Every year we get together at Mom and Dad's to eat until we can't breath. Then we proceed to decorate the tree. Everyone has their own ornament. Once the tree is decorated, we all lay under the tree, turn the overhead light off and say, "Ooooooooh, Aaaaaaaaah". - Mel King (Tuscola)
I don't know if y'all remember my parents, James and Sarah Rycroft, or not -- but years ago Daddy would secure the National Guard Armory in Sweetwater for Thanksgiving and would invite anyone in Sweetwater that didn't have family to be with to join us for dinner. We would cook all week long. We also delivered Thanksgiving dinner to people that were "home bound".Daddy would set up 3 or 4 televisions for the ball games. Folks would sit around and play domino. It always turned into quite a social event. Daddy couldn't stand the thought that anyone would be left alone on Thanksgiving. Mother and Daddy have been gone for some time now, but I'll bet there are folks that will remember this . - Sherron Foster (Paradise, TX) |
