A project titled “Women in Aviation History: The WASP Story As Told by Sweetwater Citizens” has begun with the purpose of collecting the personal stories of Sweetwater and area citizens who either worked at Avenger Field or had contact with Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) who trained there from 1943 to 1944. The National WASP World War II Museum, the Sweetwater Reporter, KXOX Radio and Sweetwater High School are sponsoring the project, which begins this month and continues through December of 2008.
Media outlets will provide public service announcements and stories requesting participation from area residents and teachers. They will provide the museum’s phone number and website for point of contact. The museum will collect and match residents willing to be interviewed with participating teachers. It will also provide teachers with tools for collecting these interviews through a teacher workshop on June 10 and through individual meetings. Teachers will assign students to specific individuals, and students will share reports at a program in early December of mid-January. The museum will publish stores online at http://waspmuseum.org. The stories and any accompanying sound and film footage will be properly archived. For more information, please call the WASP World War II Museum at 235-0099. |
