Here is the letter to the editor that ran in the Friday, May 16, 2008 edition of the Sweetwater Reporter:
Dear Editor, I see the CEO of the local cable company keeps saying how much money they have spent to improve the cable, and is showing his staff saying they deserve a raise. Well, they are constantly raising the rates and all we're getting is a bunch of reruns and people telling you how to exercise and lose weight. Also, I hear a lot about illegal aliens taking America's jobs. That is not true. The jobs they are doing are jobs the American people won't take. Look in your local paper at all the help wanted ads, and some stores and restaurants have signs posted in their windows. Most of these jobs pay $7 and $8 an hour. My wife and I have worked at jobs here for years and we've never been paid anywhere near $7 or $8 an hour. There are other people here taking advantage of the welfare system besides the illegal aliens. I noticed our cost of living raise on our social security for 2008 will be lower than ever. I guess they have to save it to give to the welfare recipients. I was talking to Bobby Gomez, who worked at a job for over 30 years and was injured and applied for Social Security disability and was refused — a man that would work if he could. But they have to save that money for the next welfare babies. So don't try to be fair anymore. It doesn't pay. Morris Jones Sweetwater
