Dr. Jerod Peek and Jim McKenzie will assume new two-year terms on the Sweetwater City Commission after failing to draw any opposition in their re-election bids. It will be the second term on the commission for both McKenzie, who represents Precinct 2, and Peek, who is the Precinct 4 representative. Neither man drew either an announced or write-in opponent prior to the March 17 deadline, ac-cording to city hall spokesperson Connie Reed.
The lack of a contested race means that the city election planned for May 10 at the Sweetwater Middle School gym will be cancelled, Reed said. The action is expected to take place at the city commission’s next regular meeting on April 8. Reed said that according to state law, McKenzie and Peek would also be declared the winners at the April meeting. However, they will not be sworn in until May, since their current terms expire at the end of April. A Sweetwater ISD trustee election planned for May 10 has also been cancelled after incumbents Bryan Studdard and Russ Petty failed to draw an opponent. Studdard, who represents District 3, and Petty, who represents District 4, will begin new three-year terms in May. Also, trustees will decide at their April meeting whether to appoint someone to fill the unexpired term of trustee Orlando Vargas, who recently resigned from the board.
