SISD parents to get Family Access

Access to information about your student will be a click away in the near future for parents in the Sweetwater Independent School District.

The SISD board of trustees recently approved the implementation of Family Access, which is an informational resource made available to every family at no cost. This resource provides real-time information about your child's grades and attendance, class schedule, immunization records, and includes the balance on his or her nutrition services account. Family Access provides safe, secure and easy access to your child's school record.
“This will allow parents access so they can become more actively involved in their student's activities and school work,” said Sue Schlueter.
While the program will be good for parents, concerns over security and privacy are being reviewed.
“Security is a must,” said SISD board member Jeannie McPherson.
Schlueter said other districts using Family Access have not had a problem with security.
The local school district will review each page on the site and modify it to fit the district.
The local Family Access online features could include a calendar, which includes grade book assignments, absences, activities and messages from teachers.
Schlueter also noted that parents can find out when their child did not turn in homework or class work.
Some other features that are available include graduation requirements and report cards.
“The students may not like that too much,” said Schlueter referring to the report cards being posted online.
The local district hopes to have Family Access online by the start of the next school year.
“It will take a good bit of training and time to do,” said Superintendent Dr. Ronny Beard. “(But) It will work.”
Beard also said many people may not have access to the Internet, but that the district will work with local businesses to supply a computer for parents while they are at work.
Schlueter said many districts are already using the system, including Breckenridge.
“They have worked out several of the kinks,” she said.
The district will spend $1,981 for the license fee and an additional $500 service fee for the set up and training.
In addition, each year the district will pay a maintenance fee in the amount of $654.
