Food, fun, families, and music will fill Newman Park on Saturday, May 17, as Sweetwater groups gather to launch a capital campaign to raise funds for park expansions and upgrades.
“Bring your camp chairs, canopies, and blanket, and have a picnic as part of ‘Saturday in the Park’,” said  mayor Greg Wortham. “We are expecting hundreds of Sweetwater-area residents in Newman Park to help launch the parks improvement campaign.”
“Saturday in the Park,” lasting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will bring together enthusiasts in soccer, softball, gravity racing, baseball, rodeo, disc golf, skateboarding, youth football, and more, as the Sweetwater community explores opportunities to raise funds to enhance Newman, Fraley, and Jones parks. The capital campaign will also coordinate with ongoing improvements for family and youth sports in the adjacent Nolan County Fairgrounds and Sweetwater High School sports facilities.
“Saturday in the Park” is sponsored by the Mayor’s Youth Task Force, the Mayor’s Parks Task Force, and various family and youth sports leagues.

The parks capital fund project will involve civic clubs, churches, sports leagues, corporate foundations, and the entities that own and operate facilities in and near Newman Park, including the City of Sweetwater, Sweetwater Independent School District, Nolan County, and the Nolan County Coliseum Board.
Various sports leagues will have exhibition events to showcase the importance of New-man Park to hundreds of local families.  There will be bands, food, and other activities during the day.
“The Chase Scott Band” and “4th Day” will entertain crowds near the city municipal pool.
Free hot dogs and pickles while they last will be provided courtesy of the Mayor’s Youth Task Force. Donations will be accepted to benefit the parks project.
The municipal pool will also have a special Splash Day Preview from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with free admission sponsored by the Mayor’s Youth Task Force and New Amsterdam Wind Source LLC.
Air castles and other fun family activities will be provided free of charge near the municipal pool.
Sports leagues and other groups will have food and fun booths to raise funds for their projects.
Special exhibitions are scheduled in such sports as girls softball, youth soccer, disc golf, gravity racing, Little League baseball, and more.  Other youth and family sports leagues will have participation information at “Saturday in the Park”.
Competitive games are also scheduled in the park, including a Sweetwater girls all-star softball game versus Wylie all-stars at 1 p.m. near Mustang Bowl at the Jerry Collins Softball Complex.
Activities will be going on throughout Newman Park, from the municipal pool to the Little League ballparks, to the Jerry Collins Softball Complex and the youth soccer field near Mustang Bowl.
