Board members of the Nolan County Foundation (NCF) have announced the date for their annual scholarship fundraiser for Nolan County high school graduates. According to NCF president Jerry Riggs, this year's golf scramble has been set for Saturday, June 14 at the Sweetwater Country Club. Registration gets underway at 8 a.m., and the event has a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Teams will consist of players in an ABCD scramble format, with club pro Don Timm assigning players. A brown bag lunch will be provided as well as refreshments. Typical awards will be presented to the top three teams, and silent auction awards will be provided by businesses and individuals who wish to assist in the fundraiser that provides college scholarships for recent high school graduates.
At the 2007 NCF Rob Ludlum Memorial Golf Classic, funds were raised that enabled the NCF to award 18 scholarships, each worth $1,000, for freshmen attending Texas colleges. The basic guidelines are that freshmen awarded scholarships will receive $500 at the start of this initial year, and also the additional $500 for the second semester if the student has maintained at least a 2.0 grade point average. Nolan County ISD high school counselors and principals assist the NCF in identifying applicants for the cash awards. Currently, any senior can apply through the appropriate ISD offices by submitting standardized aid applications. "With the increasing costs of everything associated with attending colleges," said Riggs, "the NCF awards can be of substantial assistance to both the student and others who will be supporting college freshmen." Members of the NCF will be calling on businesses and individuals to assist in this worthwhile event by subscribing as sponsors. Individual golfers who wish to play in the scramble can contact Timm by calling the country club and enter for $50 per player. Businesses who sponsor will be entitled to players, depending upon their sponsorship level. Also serving on the NCF besides Riggs are Jere Lawrence, J.V. Martin, Ronnie Cox, Bill Johnson, Rod Wetsel, Ronnie Williams and Glenn Bennett, with Homer Taylor serving as executive director. This annual event, concluded Riggs, benefits Nolan County high school seniors planning to attend any Texas college. It is just one of several activities planned by NCF to assist Nolan County's many worthwhile activities, he said. Anyone wishing additional information on this event should contact the NCF office at 236-6680, or they can call any of the NCF board members.
