Local couple donates plants, time to cemetery

Garden of Memories in Sweetwater recently received a donation of new trees and flowers, including roses, to replace several of the older shrubs at the cemetery.
Sweetwater High School head trainer Rick  Davis and his wife Patty not only donated the plants, but put their own time and effort into replacing them. They landscaped a steel-bordered bed of plants, and then put a new layer of mulch down after planting. Rick and Patty also donated several crepe myrtle trees and other shrubs to help add to the appearance of the cemetery.
“There’s so much going on in the world, so many terrible things, that we just wanted to give something back and do something nice for other people,” Patty Davis said,
The Davises said that in the years to come, they hope the plants can help give peace to some people by letting them know that their loved ones were laid to rest in a beautiful place.
“We’re doing our part to really beautify the cemetery and make some repairs happen as well,” said office manager and cemetery counselor Nedra Lee, said, She watches over 20 acres, and has been planting confederate jasmine around the cemetery office bulidings.
“We also have a number of rose plants on order to fill out many parts of the cemetery flower beds,” Lee said.
“There is a group of families in Sweetwater known as the Friends of Garden of Memories that are considering donations for other special projects and repairs that will contribute to the sanctity and beauty of the cemetery,” Lee said. “We’re planning on re-lettering the front gate Bible feature and repairing sections of the main gate rock fence as well.”
Garden of Memories was purchased in February by new owners who plan to add new plant gardens and other features to the grounds. The cemetery will start to have full-time office and groundskeeping personnel to maintain its appearance and beauty.
For more information about the upgrades and projects for the Garden of Memories, or to make a donation, contact Lee at the cemetery office or by calling 235-9887.
