Alvarez resigns position at WTCAC |

Angie Alvarez gave notice of her resignation to her board of directors as the executive director of the West Texas Children's Advocacy Center (WTCAC) last month. Her last day will be Friday, June 20. Alvarez said she has decided, with the support of her husband, that she wants to go back to school to pursue a teaching degree, as well as spend more time at home with her four boys, ages 12, 8, 3 and 19 months. “While working here, I have preached to parents about putting their kids first,” she said. “But I realized that I really wasn't.”
Alvarez has worked for the WTCAC for the past seven years. She started out as the case manager, which she did for two years, then took over as the executive director. “I have loved my job,” she said. However, she said that the job has taken up a large part of her time and made it difficult for her to spend the kind of time with her family she wanted. “Your kids are only young once,” she added. Working with children has always been Alvarez's passion, which is what drew her to work for the WTCAC and brought her to the conclusion that she wanted to be a teacher. She said one of her own teachers inspired her to work with children. She has her associate's degree and has been working on her bachelors degree for some time. Now she will focus on getting her teaching certificate. She does plan to take a year off to simply concentrate on her family, but plans to go back to school in about a year when her youngest children are a bit older, and she feels more comfortable leaving them for classes. Although Alvarez said her job with the WTCAC hasn't been an easy one, she said she doesn't regret working there for the past seven years. “Working here has enlightened me to a lot of things I never would have imagined and has educated me in a lot of different areas,” she said. She also said she has enjoyed the people she has worked with over the years, including Peggy Parrott, who she said has been a great support to her. “I will definitely miss it (my job),” she said. The WTCAC Board of Directors is now in the process of hiring a new executive director. Alvarez says she has confidence in them in finding the right person to fill that position. Alvarez also said she was thankful for her husband's support in her decision to quit working for a time. She said the decision was a family decision and wasn't an easy one to make. However, she pointed out that her faith in God helped her and her family come to the decision, and she had faith that God would continue to provide for them and get them through tough times. |
