Pickens, 'Nightline' to visit Sweetwater
Written by Staff Reports
Tuesday, 01 July 2008
T. Boone Pickens will arrive at Sweetwater’s Avenger Field at 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2, with a film crew from ABC-TV’s “Nightline” news program.
Pickens will be announcing an energy policy strategy during the program, which will consist of a Dallas office interview and his Sweetwater field tour. According to mayor Greg Wortham, roughly 14 people from “Nightline” and Pickens’ Dallas staff will be arriving at Avenger Field.
Pickens is one of the Top 10 philanthropists in the country and also an internationally acclaimed oil and gas industry leader. He has announced plans to build the world’s largest wind energy project at Pampa in 2010 which would be 4,000 megawatts, or about the total existing between Snyder and Albany.
Pickens has already been actively promoting Sweetwater as an energy solutions capital on CNBC and CNN.
He has said that he is very impressed with the progressive economic activism in Sweetwater and has publicly held the city up as a model for other communities across the United States and and beyond.
According to Wortham, Sweetwater is now regularly hosting bus tours of community leaders from the Panhandle who are seeking to learn from the “Sweetwater model.”
Wortham said Sweetwater has the attention of many potentially significant community investors because of Pick-ens’ frequent and consistent national remarks about the city and its importance to the wind industry.
Pickens has regularly dis-cussed Sweetwater from the White House to all of the major news outlets, Wortham said.
Wortham said that various business, civic and community leaders from the Sweetwater area are expected to be on hand to show their appreciation to Pickens when his plane arrives Wednesday.
In addition to Wednesday’s visit, Pickens also made a trip to Avenger Field this past year.
“I am confident that our gratefulness for his ongoing praise for Sweetwater will pay great dividends for our community,” he said.
