Tuesday marked not only the start of a new month, but also the announcement of several changes in the leadership structure of the Sweetwater Independent School District. New superintendent Terry Pittman, whose first official day on the job was Tuesday, said that Kathy Smartt had been hired as his assistant superintendent. In addition to Smartt's hiring, Pittman said Kerry Birdwell will be the new principal at Sweetwater Middle School and Heather Moore has been named as the new principal at Sweetwater Intermediate School.
Smartt has served in the Sweetwater ISD for 28 years, including the past 15 as principal of SIS. Prior to that, she was assistant principal at SMS for three years and she began her career here as a third grade teacher at Southeast Elemen-tary for 11 years. Birdwell has been serving as the assistant principal at SMS. He will be replacing Kent Ruffin, who has accepted a job as the new superintendent of the Rotan ISD. Moore is moving over from Southeast Elementary, where she had been serving as principal. "I'm excited about the changes," said Pittman, who last month was hired to replace Dr. Ronny Beard as superintendent after serving as assistant superintendent for five years and as a high school principal prior to that. "I feel pretty fortunate to be able to surround myself with so many good people." Beard, who had been superintendent here since 2004, is now the new superintendent of the Cleburne ISD and also began his new job on Tuesday. |
