Sweetwater motorists heading through the south edge of town on Highway 70 may soon be forced to slow down a bit in order to remain legal. Among the topics on Tuesday's Sweetwater City Commission agenda is a resolution which requests that the Texas Department of Transportation consider lowering the speed limit on Highway 70 South within the city limits from 70 miles per hour to 55 mph. The speed limit would remain at 70 mph outside the city limits.
At Tuesday's meeting, which begins at 9 a.m. at city hall, the commission will also consider a resolution suspending the Aug. 8 effective date of Oncor Electric Delivery Company's requested rate change in order to give the city time to study the request and establish what it considers to be reasonable rates. The resolution will also approve cooperation with the Oncor Cities Steering Commi-ttee to hire legal and consulting services and to negotiate with the company and direct any necessary litigation and appeals, find that the meeting at which the resolution is passed is open to the public as required by law, and require notice of the resolution to the company and legal counsel for the steering committee. Other action items to be considered at Tuesday's meeting include the following: — The investment report for the quarter ending June 30 of this year; — The authorization of city staff to request competitive sealed proposals at next month's meeting on self-insured group health, dental and life insurance employee benefits; — Contracting with Don Morris of the Tommy Morris Agency to represent the city as broker of record and to evaluate competitive sealed proposals; — Hearing a status report on substandard structures that were considered during the commission's meeting on May 13 of this year; — Approval of a change order relating to the construction of a ground storage tank at the high service pump station site; — Entering into executive session to deliberate compensation for city manager Eddie Brown pursuant to a provision of the Texas Government Code, followed by possible action after returning to regular session; — Any public input; — A monthly report by Brown. |
