Walkers still needed for Saturday event
This year's American Heart Walk has been set for Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at the Sweetwater High School track. The event will help raise funds to fight cardiovascular diseases. According to event organizer Jerrie Gee, walkers are still needed for the event. "People can still register and enter to walk on Saturday. If you raise $100, you get a T-shirt. Any amount of money raised is appreciated."Registration for the event is from 8-8:30 a.m. The walk will begin at 9 a.m. There will be no run to coincide with the event this year. Snacks and drinks will be available and members of the Big Country Medical Reserve Corps will be at the event to check blood pressure and other vital signs.This year's presenting sponsor is The Medicine Place. The red cap sponsor is Buzzi Unicem. T-shirt sponsors include Texas National Bank, First Financial Bank, Roscoe State Bank, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, Ludlum Measurements, Inc., Big Country Electric Cooperative, Sweetwater Jaycees, Lawrence Management, Stanley Ford of Sweetwater and Avilon United Wind Service. About 20 walkers raised a total of $4,244 for the event, bringing the grand total to $14,171 raised for the American Heart Association. The top four teams were Texas National Bank bringing in $1,381, Texas State Technical College bringing in $1,119, Sweetwater Healthcare Center bringing in $422 and Ludlum Measurements bringing in $375.
