WASP Homecoming Makes for Memorable Memorial Day

The past came alive for hundreds of Sweetwater residents over the Memorial Day weekend with the opening of the WASP Museum and Hanger No. 1 at Avenger Field to the public. Although some cosmetic work continues on the exterior of Hanger No. 1, the interior was finished just in time for 6 p.m., when invited guests were treated to a sold out private reception as brilliant red, white and blue American flags flapped in the warm Texas wind outside. The function included dinner and dancing as well as a memorial service, a WASP forum, a silent auction and music provided by the Sweetwater Municipal Band. Many fond memories would be brought back as a result for those who were there when Avenger Field was a force to be reckoned with during the Second World War.
