Run for the WASP.
The WASP Museum invites everyone to come out and celebrate their freedom for Veteran's Day 2010, with a 5K Run and a 1.2 mile walk.
On Saturday, Nov. 13, the National WASP WWII Museum will honor the American veterans that have served their country and helped preserve the nation's freedoms. Both, the walk and run will begin at 1 p.m. Students and military personnel that would like to take part will be charged an entry fee of $20 and all other participants will pay an entry fee of $25. The course for the 5k run will be around the Sweetwater Texas State Technical College campus and the walk will start at the WASP Museum and end at the WASP wishing well. The race will be kicked off with a WWII airplane fly-over.
The walk and run will begin and end at the WASP Museum. There will be awards for the winning male and female winners, as well as the winners in the 10-year-age groups. There will be timing specialists from Big Spring marking the official times.
During the event, the museum will be open to the public and admission is free. There will be refreshments and a documentary film of the WASPs, who trained at Avenger Field. Museum staff will also be on hand to provide guided tours through the circa 1929 Hangar One. Those attending the event will also have the opportunity to meet a Congressional Gold Medal recipient. She will be available for autographs and pictures, with the winning contestants as she presents their awards. A Dyess female pilot will also be on hand.
After the race, at 7:30 p.m., all are invited to dance the night away at the hangar for a WWII Era Dance. The Sweetwater Municipal Band will be providing the entertainment and exhibitions by swing dancers will be performed. Admission is $25 per couple and cocktail attire or period dress is requested.
