During his City Manager's report at the March meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission, Eddie Brown discussed the outcome of the city's dispute toward the application for a $7.5 million loan to the Bitter Creek Water Supply Corporation (BCWSC).
At their meeting held on February 28 in Austin, the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) approved the loan. Sweetwater was represented by some members of city staff at the meeting, but they were unable to make their case to the board.
Brown stated that a staff member of the TWDB informed the board during open session that the loss of the BCWSC revenue to Sweetwater was not significant to the city. However, Brown noted that the loss is about a 7% decrease in revenue to the city, and other options are now being examined to replace the loss.
In addition, the city has submitted an application to the TWDB for 2014 cycle funding under the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF). The application was placed prior to the March 1 deadline.
The list of accepted applicants is expected to be unveiled this summer, with funding to be given sometime this October. While possible grant-type funds could be obtained, interest rates could play a factor in whether the city accepts.
Furthermore, dam inspections for Oak Creek Lake, Lake Sweetwater and Lake Trammell were recently completed by Enprotec, Hibbs & Todd engineers. The inspections take place on an annual basis, with this year's inspections reported as going well.
Also, the city has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for the 29th year. Brown commended city staff for their work, as the award is an incredible accomplishment for a city of Sweetwater's size.
Finally, the Taste of Sweetwater will be held on Monday, April 8, 2013 at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex. Funds raised from the event benefit the local SNAP (Senior Nutrition Activities Program).
