Weather cancels tourneys

December 6, 2013

Several Sweetwater bas-ketball teams had to cancel scheduled games Thursday at local and area tourna-ments due to icy weather conditions. The same was true for the Highland and Roscoe boys and girls bas-ketball teams, who were to begin play at Highland’s an-nual Hilltop Classic.
Blackwell’s two varsity teams were the only ones from Nolan County to play as the weather took its toll around the state.
Also, the Graham-Shal-lowater quarterfinal playoff at Sweetwater’s Mustang Bowl was moved from 7 p.m. today to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Blackwell’s annual tourn-ament (Oak Creek Classic) got in at least three games, two by the Blackwell boys and one by the girls, desp-ite the weather. But athletic director Clint Lowry said no other tournament games are scheduled today and that he doubted any more games would be played Saturday.
For Sweetwater, the bad weather cancelled all games this weekend at the Stanton varsity tournament as well as the Coleman tournament (sub-varsity boys) and two junior high tournaments.
Blackwell’s boys defeated Panther Creek 63-44 and Paint Rock 58-36 to go 4-0 overall. Individual scoring was unavailable. The girls (2-2) won 52-19 over Lor-aine as Crystal Chavez had 10, Abby Gott and Stephanie Metcalf eight, Brooklyn Harris seven, Shianne Solis six, Hailey Bennett and Halee Sanderson four, Krista Clower three and Bailey McGlothlin two.
Shallowater and Graham will come to Sweetwater armed with perfect 13-0 records this season. In the playoffs, Graham has beat-en Castleberry (68-0), Glen Rose (34-0) and Lubbock Estacado (42-6) during its dominating run.
Shallowater won 42-12 against Dalhart to begin its playoff run, then had closer games in recent weeks with Monahans (43-35) and Vernon (35-26). The Shallowater-Graham winner will advance to the state semifinals to play Argyle or Gladewater.
