The Sweetwater varsity girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season by beating San Angelo Lake View 51-48 here Saturday.
Cierra Knox had 13 points and Shaneese Brown 12 to pace Sweetwater, which led Lake View 41-30 after three periods before holding on for the victory. The Lady Mustangs led by five, 27-22 at halftime. Also scoring for Sweetwater (1-1 this season) were Taylor McPherson with eight, Hayley Brownlow and Kayla Chowning with five, Bianca Castillo with four and Maddie Jones and Abby McPherson with two.
Sweetwater entertains Wichita Falls Hirschi at 6:30 p.m. today, with JV and freshman games also scheduled. The Sweetwater boys are scheduled to start their season next Tuesday.
The JV girls (1-1) lost to Lake Viewâ€™s JV 25-19. Abby Garcia scored five points, Payton Moore four, Kensi Chowning and Jasmine Reddic three, Jaya Atkins two and Gabriele Fuentes and Marissa Sanchez one.
The freshman girls bas-ketball team began its sea-son with an 18-12 win over Lake View.
Lauren Jones paced the teamâ€™s win by scoring eight points, while Kaitlyn Foster had four points and Jennifer Medellin, Danielle Vega and Davina Walker two.
Highland girls win
Highlandâ€™s girls beat For-san 49-38 on Saturday.
Sierra Allen had 15 points and Madison Moseley 11 to pace Highland, which led 14-4, 29-16 and 34-27 at the breaks while improving its record to 2-0. The Lady Hornets, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, Division II by the Texas Association of Basket-ball Coaches, also got nine points from Hannah Allen, four from Sydny Helbert, three from Morgan Monroe and Beth Richburg and two from Schyler Kimbrell and Kaylee Martin.
Highlandâ€™s JV girls lost 27-21. Kailee Hall had 10 points, Kristen Harris four, Madison Braden three and Emily Harris and Sabrina Romero two.
Roscoeâ€™s girls (0-2) lost to Coahoma 40-36 in overtime in their game on Saturday in Coahoma. Olivia Saddler led Roscoe with 10 points, but Coahoma rallied from a 10-point deficit after three periods to win in OT.
Roscoeâ€™s JV girls lost to Coahoma 21-20 on Satur-day. Magali Casas had 12 points to pace Roscoe, which led 5-0 after one quarter and 10-6 at the half until Coahoma rallied for a 14-12 lead after three quarters.
