Welch is BCAHOF inductee

May 28, 2011

Mike Welch, a Sweetwater native who during his high school days helped lead the Mustangs to their only state football title in school history in 1985 and later starred at Baylor University, was inducted recently into the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame along with nine others during a banquet ceremony that was held at the Abilene Civic Center. Welch started at running back and defensive back while at Sweetwater, twice winning all-state honors, then started at Baylor all four years where he became a Baylor Legend after winning All-America honors and recording a school record-tying 16 interceptions, plus 319 tackles while playing defensive back. At Sweetwater, Welch recorded three interceptions in the team’s 17-7 championship game win over Tomball when he was a senior. Last year, he was named a second-team defensive back on Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine’s 50th anniversary high school football team, and he was the only Big Country athlete to be named to the team. This year’s Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame class also included Cindy Shelton Raughton, a former Avoca basketball star who also played for Wayland Baptist College’s legendary Flying Queens. She now lives in Roscoe.
