This week’s Sweetwater Reporter Spotlight Citizen is Robert Whitteker. Robert was born in Deming, NM and moved to Sweetwater at the age of 4. He is a graduate of Newman High School, later to be named Sweetwater High School, class of 1965. Whitteker has worked at Ludlum Measurements Inc. for 11 years, and was previously employed by Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) for 32.5 years.
Robert received a Bachelors in Business Management from Texas Tech University in 1972. While in college he also served with the United States Marine Corps from 1970-1973, reciting the rank of Corporal E-4.
After graduating college he returned to Sweetwater and married Scarlett (Rhoads) Whitteker July 27, 1974. They then decide to make Sweetwater their permanent home. He is the father of Reece Whitteker, of Austin, and Stacy Fritz, of Sweetwater, and the Father in Law of Coltin Fritz, of Sweetwater.
Robert has been on the board at the Sweetwater Country Club, and the President of the Nolan County Texas Tech Alumni Association. He has also coached many youth sports such as baseball, softball, and basketball, and others. He often spends his time golfing, at the lake water skiing, at his barn he calls the “Palava Country Club and Resort”, and working on his daughter’s house.
Robert attends the First Presbyterian Church of Sweetwater, where he has also served on the church session.
Whitteker is related to Tom McCarty, a known outlaw of the Butch Cassidy outlaw gang. He also has gone bungee jumping with his niece. He would also like me to mention he can STILL at the age of 71 slalom water ski!
When asked why he loves Sweetwater and the benefits of living here, he replied with “I grew up here and stayed because of all the nice people and memories. West Texas is God’s Country!” His favorite “Sweetwater memory” is winning the State Championship in 1985.
