Graveside services for William D. “Bill” Swartz, 71, of Sweetwater, will be held Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, at 10 a.m. in Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, Texas with Military Graveside Rites performed by the U.S. Army Military Honor Guard from Fort Hood, Texas with Chaplain Eddie Rivera officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Swartz died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
He was born Sept. 5, 1940, in Vineland, New Jersey. “Bill,” as his family and friends knew him, served in the military for 22 years and retired. Bill’s love of woodworking was a family trait. He spent his last years enriching many lives with his creations and had his own business as a master carpenter. His mother was Inez Carleton. The Carleton and Swartz family men have a long history of military service dating back as far as the Revolutionary War. Bill spent many years serving all over the world; his childhood home was Vineland, NJ. Bill’s final years were in Sweetwater, where he was known and loved by many. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors included four sons, John. N. Swartz and wife Katherine from Battlecreek, MI, Jason W. Swartz and wife Bronwyn from Austin, TX, Matt J. Swartz and wife Robin from Abilene, TX and James B. Swartz and wife Amber from Emmet, Idaho; three sisters, Sandra Jones from Vineland, NJ, Inez Longbottom from Charlotte, NC and Doris Koering from Pittsgrove, NJ; a brother, Raymond Davidson from Depwater, NJ; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
