McSherry resigns, will be Brady coach

Candice Wyatt has been hired as Sweetwater’s new girls coordinator and head girls basketball coach, according to athletic director Craig Slaughter.
Wyatt will be replacing Jerry McSherry, who held both positions the past two years before resigning to become head girls basketball coach at Brady.
Wyatt, who is a native of Cross Plains, has previous coaching experience at May, Sunray and Dimmitt, where she was serving as assistant girls basketball and track coach. She also held those positions while at Sunray.
Although this will be Wyatt’s first head coaching job, Slaughter said “I think she will be a great fit. The girls program has been on a positive track and we definitely want it to continue. We love her ideas for the program.”
However, Slaughter said he would miss McSherry, who has won 366 games in a successful 19-year career and took 11 of his teams to the playoffs, including one to the state semifinals in 2000.
At Sweetwater, he had just a 28-36 record. But the team’s 16 wins this past year, when Sweetwater finished 16-17, were the most since 2006.
“I wish him the best,” said Slaughter. “He did a really good job for us and he’s a very good friend.”
Slaughter also said John Bennett has been hired as assistant football and head JV baseball coach. Bennett comes from Huntington, a Class 3A school in East Texas, where he was defensive coordinator and JV baseball coach, and replaces Chance Evans, who left to become head baseball coach at Ranger.
Two coaches — Thomas (Tic) Hines and David Mayes — are retiring after being at Sweetwater for over 30 years. Mayes has been a JV baseball and assistant football coach, and Hines has been a longtime football, track and basketball coach at the middle school.
