Wylie’s girls drain 11 treys as SW girls fall to 0-2 in district

January 15, 2011

Sweetwater’s Kinsey Browning (4) goes up for a shot in heavy traffic against three Wylie defenders during Friday’s District 5-3A game. Browning scored eight points but Wylie won the game, 63-32.

ABILENE — On Friday, the Sweetwater girls basketball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Wylie in the first 2:47 of the contest and the host team failed to connect on a field goal until almost halfway through the opening period. But after that slow start, Wylie soon found its shooting touch in a big way and won, 63-32, to maintain a perfect 3-0 record in district play while Sweetwater (0-2, 15-12) is still looking for its first win.
Peyton Little gave Wylie its first lead, 7-4, by hitting the first of her five 3-pointers en route to a 28-point performance. But Little wasn’t the only member of her team to score from long range, as Tucker Smith had four treys and the Lady Bulldogs (15-13 overall) finished the night by making 11 in all. Sweetwater, meanwhile, was scoreless from long range as the Lady Mus-tangs never quite got their offense untracked.
Sweetwater trailed just 16-11 when Kinsey Brown-ing scored early in the second quarter, but Wylie then put the game basically out of reach over the rest of the period with a 20-4 run to make it 36-15 at halftime. After that, Wylie held at least a 16-point lead the rest of the game and built its advantage to 33 points twice in the fourth period.
For Sweetwater, which is back on the road Tuesday to face Big Spring, Browning and Alicia Finn scored eight points to lead the way. Kendra Crosson and Suede Shirley had five, Taylor McKoy four and Candice Hernandez two for the Lady Mustangs, who had just 10 field goals. Tuesday’s win-ner will escape the District 5-3A cellar, as Big Spring is also 0-2 in district after losing Friday to Brownwood, 52-37, but is 15-5 overall.
