While Sweetwater has one more game plus an open date and Blackwell and Highland are a month away, Roscoe officially begins its “second season” today when the Plowboys host Baird in their District 7-1A, Division II opener at 7:30 p.m.
Roscoe went 1-2 in non-district under new coach Jake Freeman, but a win tonight would equal its victory total for all of last year. One of the Plowboys’ two wins a year ago was in their district opener with Baird as Roscoe prevailed 14-0.
Freeman said getting a win tonight is important.
“If we can start the district 1-0 it will be a huge boost for our kids and also put us right where we need to be as far as controlling our own destiny,” he said. “You never want to start 0-1 and have to battle to get back in the district race.”
Roscoe was off last week after completing non-district play with a 19-0 loss to Miles.
“During the off week we went back and worked on a lot of fundamentals,” said Freeman. The Plowboys, he added, got back to “correc-ting the mistakes we made during prior weeks while polishing up all three phases of the game (offense, defense and special teams).”
Sweetwater is also at home tonight to face Brownwood in its final tuneup for 4-3A action that begins Oct. 11. The team has an open date next week. Highland is at Trent and Blackwell plays at Blanket. The teams’ annual six-man showdown will be at Blackwell on Oct. 11.
