Wylie had to struggle to put away Sweetwater here Tuesday before winning the teams’ District 4-3A volleyball match in three games.
That was good news for Sweetwater coach Liz Miller, whose team (0-2, 9-17) lost by scores of 25-15, 25-10 and 25-19 to Wylie (2-0, 21-9) at Mustang Gym.
“I’m proud of my girls. I thought they did great. We competed,” Miller said.
Sweetwater led for much of Game 3, which was tied 13-13 until Wylie scored 12 of the last 18 points to com-plete a three-game sweep.
Maddie Berry led Sweet-water with five kills plus three digs, while Mikeilah Foust had four kills, three digs and two blocks for the Lady Mustangs.
Shaneese Brown had three kills, three blocks and one dig; Kayla Chowning had three kills, 12 digs and two aces; and Ziggy Collins had two kills. Kensi Chown-ing, Aly Heredia and Mad-die Jones also had kills.
Morgan Gomez led the team with 15 digs while Mikki Reschman had nine, Heredia seven, Jones four, Kensi Chowning two and Alexis Williams one.
Heredia and Jones each finished with seven assists.
According to Miller, her team hit the ball well in the pregame warmup and was able to sustain the effort for most of the match. “I told them not to play it safe. We just played and didn’t worry so much,” she said.
Sweetwater will continue its homestand Friday when the team hosts Greenwood (0-2) starting at 6:15 p.m.
