Both of Sweetwater’s sub-varsity football teams lost road games at Big Spring on Thursday. The JV (6-2, 2-1) fell 12-6 and the freshmen (3-4, 0-3) lost 34-14.
Sweetwater’s JV led 6-0 early on in its game against Big Spring after a 3-yard TD pass from Max Gomez to Hunter Mobley.
But the Mustangs were unable to score again — in part due to turnovers, penalties and breakdowns in pass protection. A holding penalty with about three minutes left proved costly as it denied a Gomez touchdown on a dive that would have tied the game at 12.
Sweetwater’s defense had a solid effort the entire game and was led by Adrian Vizzerra and Colby Green-wood, who were in on several tackles.
Sweetwater’s freshmen also scored first in their contest with Big Spring, as they took an early 6-0 lead on Javier Olguin’s 8-yard run. But it was the fourth period before they scored again on Peyton Hill’s 10-yard run as Big Spring rallied for the win. Hill also had a 2-point conversion run. Other offensive standouts for Sweetwater were Jordan McGee (two pass completions to Hill), Dylan Ausborn, Robert King, Keevin Houston, Junior Lawhon, Dylan Heiskell, Tristan Vasquez, Luis Vas-quez and Garrett Davison.
The standouts on the defensive side were Olguin, Hill, John Clift, Vasquez, Davison and Matt Figueroa. Both teams play their final home game this Thursday against Monahans.
