Just over 18 percent of Texas households experience food insecurity, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. An even more jarring statistic is that one in four Texas children live in these households.
As we prepare for Thanksgiving in just a few weeks, the employees at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) are already thinking about how they can do their part to ensure that area residents have the food they need to enjoy the upcoming holiday. For the second year in a row, RPMH is launching their “A Thousand Cans of Care” canned food drive, and inviting the community to participate now through Friday, Nov. 15.
“Canned food drives are nothing new to organizations in Nolan County and across the world, including here at RPMH. What’s different about '1,000 Cans of Caring’ though is that our team members are once again setting a baseline minimum of what they aim to contribute to help feed those in need,” said Donna Boatright, administrator at the hospital. “We exceeded our goal last year, and I know this year we’re going go above and beyond to raise awareness of the state of hunger.”
It is estimated that one in six Americans never know where their next meal will come from one day to the next. That estimate translates to nearly 49.1 million children and adults.
Food is a critical component to one’s wellness because the body uses nutrients for the immune system, growth and for other essential metabolic functions.
All donations from the RPMH “A Thousand Cans of Care” campaign will go directly to local food pantries. If you would like to donate canned or non-perishable food, you can drop off your contribution at the RPMH Emergency Department waiting room by Nov. 15.
Food items that can be donated include, but are not limited to: canned goods, boxed and bottled juice, coffee, tea, sugar, canned milk, cereal, cookies, rice, canned vegetables, pasta, read-to-make cakes and muffins, hearty soups and stews and canned tuna/chicken/beef.
