The Highland girls basketball team is still No. 1 in Class 1A, Division II in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ initial regular-season poll that was released Monday.
Highland (4-0) was No. 1 in the TABC preseason poll and kept the top spot after starting the year with wins over Sweetwater (55-24), Forsan (49-38), Aspermont (50-27) and Smyer (64-49), which is currently No. 17 in Class 1A, Division I. The Lady Hornets are coming off a 31-5 season in which they were regional champs and became the first girls team from Highland to ever go to the state tournament before losing in the semifinals to No. 1-ranked Saltillo.
Lipan (6-1) is No. 2 in this week’s TABC poll followed by Follett (4-0), Menard (6-0), Leakey (2-0), Naza-reth (2-1), Garden City (4-1), Eula (2-0), Rankin (3-0) and Frost (2-0). Anton (2-0), Goodrich (3-0), Campbell (5-1), Strawn (6-2), Valley (3-1), Chireno (6-1), Leggett (1-1), Cross Plains (5-2), Borden County (1-0), Rochelle (5-2), Miami (4-0), Buckholts (5-1), Round Top-Carmine (0-0), Paducah (1-1) and Peters-burg (1-0) complete the top 25. Two girls teams from District 4-3A, Wylie (No. 10) and Big Spring (No. 24), are ranked in Class 3A.
