Sweetwater still has three unbeaten sub-varsity high school basketball teams af-ter winning three of four games against Merkel here on Tuesday.
Sweetwater’s freshman and JV boys are both off to 3-0 starts for the young season after winning by scores of 47-22 and 49-29, respectively. Also, the freshman girls improved to 8-0 by defeating Merkel 47-18, while the JV girls fell 30-27 in their contest.
Michael Green scored 16 points and Jordan McGee 14 to pace the freshman boys, who outscored Mer-kel 26-6 in the second half. Jacoby Hunt scored eight, Hunter Mobley five and Garrett Davison and Martin Morini two. Hardy Escobar poured in 20 points and Michael Lawrence had 13 for the JV boys, while Mat-thew Trevino had six, Mark Lawrence four and Max Gomez, Jordan Jones and Deshaun Williams two.
Meanwhile, Stephanie Castillo scored 20 points and Lauren Jones 16 as the freshman girls stayed unde-feated. Kaitlyn Foster con-tributed seven points and Davina Walker had four. Sweetwater outscored Mer-kel 17-1 in the middle two periods to open an insur-mountable lead.
The JV girls (1-6) lost to Merkel despite Kensi Chow-ning scoring 11 points and Abby Garcia 10. Sweetwater led 5-4, 19-11 and 24-19 at the breaks, but Merkel won the fourth quarter 11-3 to come away with the victory. Jasmine Reddic had three points, Marissa Sanchez two and Payton Moore one.
Sweetwater’s freshman and JV boys will play at Coleman’s three-day tour-nament starting Thursday, while both girls teams are idle until next week.
