Sweetwater’s two varsity basketball teams returned from the Thanksgiving holi-day break with a vengeance on Tuesday, as they defeated Merkel teams in impressive fashion at Mustang Gym.
The Lady Mustang girls began the doubleheader with a 48-33 win, and the Mustang boys cruised past Merkel 63-25 for a sweep.
It was the final tuneup for Sweetwater’s teams before going back on the road at Stanton to play in a three-day tournament that tips off on Thursday.
The Sweetwater boys are off to a 3-0 start after their dominating win. Rhett Tor-res had 20 points and Kal-eb Hoover 17 for the Mus-tangs, who never trailed in the contest. Sweetwater held leads of 21-8, 38-14 and 48-22 at the quarter breaks against the outgunned Badgers, who didn’t have a single player in double figures. Torres had 14 of his total in the opening half of play, while Hoover scored eight points in a 32-second span of the fourth period.De’andre Gatson and Quen-tin Wetsel had six points, Jacob Peyton five, Dylan Bennett four, J.C. Poe three and Marquees Jenkins two for the Mustangs, whose 63 points were a season high.
Sweetwater’s girls (3-3) also led Merkel all the way in their game, though it wasn’t quite as easy for the Lady Mustangs.
Sweetwater led 17-8 after the opening quarter, but the visitors got within four points (19-15) in the second period until an 8-1 run by the Lady Mustangs gave them a 27-16 halftime edge.
Sweetwater added four more points to extend its lead to 31-16, only to see it quickly whittled down to five (31-26) following a 10-0 run by Merkel.
The lead was down to just three, 34-31, late in the third period before Sweetwater went on a 14-2 run to end the game.
Merkel was scoreless over the final 4:49.
Shaneese Brown had 15 points and Cierra Knox 10 to pace the Lady Mustangs’ victory. Also scoring points were Hayley Brownlow and Kayla Chowning with sev-en, Taylor McPherson with five and Maddie Jones and Abby McPherson with two. Knox was playing for the first time since suffering a concussion in mid-Novem-ber which forced her to miss the last two games.
