WALL — A year ago, the Sweetwater High School boys basketball team started out 3-0 only to suffer its first loss to a state-ranked Wall team.
It happened again Tues-day as the Mustangs suffered a 73-32 road loss to the Hawks, currently ranked No. 4 in Class 2A. Wall led 22-12, 41-22 and 69-27 at the breaks.
Sweetwater, which plays in Coahoma’s three-day tournament starting Thursday (see schedule below), was led by Taylor Jones with nine points. Ryan Mercer scored seven, Dylon Adames six, Chris Rodgers four and Kaleb Hoover, Paxton Kelley and Kevin Sepeda two. The Mustangs played a bit short-handed, using four players who were called up from the sub-varsity squads as replacements.
Sweetwater’s JV boys fared much better, impro-ving their record to 3-1 with a 37-30 victory over Wall’s JV team. Cole Max-well had 13 points to pace Sweetwater, which led 16-12 at halftime.
Nate Hardin had seven, Brandon Howell and Kyle McSherry four, Willie Norman three and Matt Kitchens, Nick Nemir and Quentin Wetsel with two.
Roscoe’s varsity boys finally began their season Tuesday when they went to Hawley, but the Plowboys lost the game 47-42. Caden Smith had 13 points, Cody Graham 11 and Gabriel Perez eight for Roscoe, which also lost the JV boys game 48-38.
But while the boys will still be looking for their first win when they play at Blackwell’s three-day tournament starting Thursday, the Roscoe girls will be coming off a win as they improved to 2-3 with a 57-38 victory Tuesday over Hawley. Sara Kingston scored 18 points and Lynnsi Moses 17 to pace the win.
Caleb Jeter had 15 points and Brandon Elliott 13 as Blackwell’s boys (1-5) defeated Jayton, 45-37, for their first win. Jayden Jones added eight points, Mason Magness seven and Caleb Magness two.
The Blackwell girls (1-7) also played Jayton Tuesday but lost their game, 40-24. Reccie Roland scored a team-high 12 points while Kaitlyn Gaston had six, Amanda Bullard four and Jessica Morrow two.
