ABILENE — It didn’t take too long Friday for visiting Sweetwater to put runs on the scoreboard in its 2014 baseball season opener at Abilene Cooper.
Thanks to a four-run sec-ond inning, the Mustangs were enjoying what looked like a comfortable 4-0 lead over the Cougars. However, Cooper fought its way back and eventually overtook Sweetwater for a 6-4 win.
The Cougars completed their rally with a three-run sixth inning that wiped out Sweetwater’s 4-3 lead.
The Mustangs took ad-vantage of three errors and a hit batter, plus two hits, to build their early lead but failed to add to it off Cooper pitcher Jonathan Nicholson, who shut Sweetwater down the rest of the way. Cooper used two wild pitches, a sac bunt and two walks plus two singles to take the lead in the sixth. and added an insurance run on a ground ball to second base before the inning was finally over.
A double by Greg Aiken and a walk to Scott Warner gave Sweetwater runners at first and second in the top of the seventh, but a strikeout and a ground ball ended the game. James Clift threw five innings and Hayden Reeves finished up for Sweetwater, which is at Granbury’s tournament starting Thursday.
