The Sweetwater High School girls golf team shot a two-day score of 751 at its Sweetwater Golf Classic this past weekend for a second-place finish.
Sweetwater shot 364 in Friday’s opening round and finished with a 387 on Saturday at the event held at Sweetwater Country Club.
The Lady Mustangs finished 33 shots behind first-place Midland Greenwood, which shot an opening 355 and finished with a 363 for a winning 718 total.
Sweetwater had three golfers in the top 10. Corynn Martin (85-93-178) placed third and Kensi Chowning (88-91-179) finished fourth, while Alexis Castillo (89-97-186) placed eighth overall. Also on the No. 1 team were Payton Moore (105-106-211) and Alaina Andews (102-112-214).
Martin finished a distant 34 shots behind winning medalist Ryan Pate of Greenwood, whose 144 to-tal was 28 shots ahead of the second-place total.
Sweetwater entered two teams at the event and the No. 2 team shot an 826 to place fifth, placing 15 shots behind fourth-place Wylie and 49 shots behind third-place Lamesa’s 777 total. The team’s members were Alyssa Soles (100-98-198), Gabby Reyes (96-105-201), Christa Martin (102-101-213), Brooke Hefner (112-112-224) and Mallory Car-ney (114-118-232). Holly Johnson (128-117-245), Serena Flores (150-146-296) and Rhylee Meneses (151) played for Sweetwater as medalists only.
Abilene High (853) placed sixth, Abilene Cooper (902) was seventh and Lamesa No. 2 (989) was eighth in the final team standings.
The varsity and JV girls teams are scheduled to play again, weather permitting, at Baird on Wednesday. The varsity will also play at Comanche on March 3 and at Kermit on March 17 before going to Monahans on March 27 for the first leg of the district tournament.
