Though it was a short trip, Tuesday proved to be a long night for both Sweetwater High School varsity basketball teams at Merkel.
The SHS girls lost 54-29 to the Lady Badgers, who are currently ranked No. 7 among all Class 2A teams by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. Then the SHS boys — who just two weeks earlier had defeated Merkel 60-55 at Mustang Gym — fell victim to a horrible start and lost, 64-48. Both teams will get another shot at Merkel on Thursday, however, when they play first-round games at the Stanton tournament that runs through Saturday (see schedules below).
In the girls game, Sweet-water (6-7) trailed just 20-12 until Merkel’s 10-0 run to end the first half essentially put the game out of reach for the Lady Mustangs.
Sweetwater, held to its second-lowest point total of the year, got a team-high 10 points from Taylor McKoy but no other player reached double figures.
Alicia Finn had six points, Kinsey Browning five, Suede Shirley three, Kendra Crosson and Candice Her-nandez two and Brittany Lashinski one.
In the boys game, Sweet-water (4-4) trailed Merkel by 24 points, 36-12, late in the first half before finally putting together a second-half surge. But the Mustangs were never able to get any closer than 12 points. They did get 29 points by Paxton Kelley, while Taylor Jones had 12, Dylon Adames four, B.J. Walker two and Gabriel Medellin one.
