A second-place finish by the JV girls in Abilene and a 3-0 record by the freshman boys at their own tournament highlighted Sweetwater High School’s sub-varsity high school basketball action this past weekend.
Also, Sweetwater’s seventh grade White boys finished 3-0 and the eighth grade White boys were 2-1 at their local tournament to finish as champions and co-cham-pions, respectively, of their divisions.
The JV girls (13-1) ran their season-opening win streak to 13 games before dropping a close 28-26 decision to Jim Ned’s JV in the championship game at Abilene Cooper. Sweetwater reached the finals with wins over the Wylie freshmen (39-33), the Jim Ned freshmen (50-9) and the Abilene Cooper JV (18-17). Kathleen Campbell and Kelsi Crosson had 10 points and Shelby Cason nine vs. Wylie; Crosson and Elise Lawrence had 13 and Destiny Osteen 10 vs. Jim Ned’s freshmen; Cason had five points vs. Cooper’s JV; and Lawrence had nine and Campbell six against Jim Ned’s JV.
The freshman boys, who were the host team for their tournament at Mustang Gym along with the JV boys, opened by beating Colorado City 42-20 on Friday and came back to win two games on Saturday, knocking off Merkel 39-33 and Wall 44-37.
Quentin Wetsel scored 11 points in the win over Colorado City, while Dylan Bennett had 12 points and Kaleb Hoover 11 in the win over Merkel and Hoover had 17 in the team’s victory against Wall.
The JV boys beat Colorado City 29-27 in Friday’s opener but lost to Merkel 50-35 and to Wall 45-22 on Saturday. Ryan Line-baugh scored 15 points to pace Sweetwater’s win over Colorado City, while Kyle McSherry led the team with seven points vs. Merkel and 10 points against Wall.
Sweetwater’s seventh grade White boys beat Snyder 33-16, dominated Merkel 58-8 and ended their impressive three-game run by knocking off Wall 40-8, giving them an average winning margin of 33 points.
Isaiah Gonzales had six points and Roman Acuna and Kris Warner had five vs. Snyder; Jonevan Hannah had 10 points and Warner and Adrian Ortega eight against Merkel; and Gonzales had eight, Deshaun Williams six and Warner five vs. Wall.
Sweetwater’s eighth grade White boys fell to Snyder 36-19, but then defeated Merkel 23-7 and downed Wall 25-10.
Gwan Hill had six points and Zachary Bax five vs. Snyder; Wesley Maxwell had seven points and Nick Haley six vs. Merkel; and Haley and Seth Peeples had six and Bax and Jonathan Neri four vs. Wall.
Also, the Sweetwater seventh and eighth grade boys played at Snyder and the seventh and eighth grade girls both played host to Snyder on Monday in what were their final games of 2010 before resuming play in January. Results are not yet available.
Meanwhile, the Sweetwater freshman boys host Breckenridge at 4:30 p.m. today and the JV boys host Breckenridge at 6. Both of the Sweetwater sub-varsity high school girls teams will host Lamesa today, with the JV game at 4:30 and the freshman contest at 7:30 p.m.
