The Highland girls bas-ketball team opened district play with 43-18 victory over Hermleigh on Tuesday.
The Lady Hornets, who were coming off a second-place finish at their annual Hilltop Classic on Saturday, received 20 points from Callie Sandusky and 11 from Sierra Allen as they improved to 8-7 overall.
Highland was ahead 9-4 after one quarter and 20-10 at halftime, then blanked Hermleigh 13-0 in the third quarter. Beth Richburg had four points, Kara Hughey and Shyan Womack three and Jessica McCain two.
In non-district Nolan County basketball action, the Roscoe boys fell victim to Albany’s fourth-quarter rally in a 46-45 loss while the Roscoe girls also lost to Albany, 50-24.
Sara Kingston scored 10 points for the Plowgirls (5-8) while Caden Smith had 25 points for the Plow-boys (5-5), who were ahead at the end of each of the first three quarters against the visiting Lions. Roscoe held leads of 12-9, 24-19 and 34-28 at the breaks until Albany rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring Roscoe 18-11 to pull out the win. Cody Graham had 10 points for the Plowboys.
