Tuesday’s district opener against Veribest brought out the very best in the Blackwell girls basketball team as the Lady Hornets romped to a 58-28 victory.
It was the most onesided win of the year — and also the second victory over Veribest in four days — for Blackwell, which improved its season mark to 5-10.
Jennifer Allen and Aman-da Bullard scored 14 points, Kaitlyn Gaston 13 and Rec-cie Roland 11 for Blackwell, which led 11-1, 23-8 and 36-16 at the quarter breaks. Gaston hit two 3-pointers and Roland one.
Blackwell will resume district play this Friday at Bronte with a three-game winning streak, including a 28-24 non-district victory over Veribest Saturday in the consolation finals of the Lohn tournament.
In that game, Allen and Roland were the team’s top scorers with eight points apiece while Jessica Morrow added six points.
At the Lohn tournament, Blackwell opened with a 36-20 loss to Santa Anna last Thursday. But the Lady Hornets bounced back to beat Panther Creek 41-33 on Friday and reach Saturday’s consolation title game against Veribest.
Against Panther Creek, Roland had a team-high 19 points while Gaston scored eight, Bullard and Morrow five and Brooklyn Harris four. Blackwell outscored Panther Creek 24-16 in the second half to break a 17-17 tie at halftime.
Against Santa Anna, the Lady Hornets got five points from Morrow while Allen, Gaston and Roland scored four apiece.
