The Highland girls won, but the Sweetwater and Blackwell boys were unable to produce a victory in their final games prior to the Christmas holiday break.
The Sweetwater boys (5-8) lost at Andrews, 75-36, on Monday, continuing a slump that has seen the team drop seven of eight games after starting out 4-1.
Andrews jumped out to a 20-11 lead after one quarter, then really took charge as the hosts increased their lead to 46-15 at half-time and 60-24 after three periods.
Sweetwater was led in scoring by Taylor Jones and Paxton Kelley with 11 points each. Gabriel Medellin had seven, Dylon Adames four, B.J. Walker two and Kevin Sepeda one. The Mustangs will see action again Dec. 28-30 at the Caprock Classic in Lubbock. Sweetwater’s girls (11-8) also return Dec. 28 at Breckenridge’s two-day tournament.
Sweetwater’s JV boys (8-6) lost to the Andrews JV boys, 54-28, on Monday. Nick Nemir led the Mustangs with nine points.
The Highland girls (9-8) are back over .500 overall and 2-1 in district a 62-29 win against Ira (also 2-1) on Tuesday. Both teams trail Roby (3-0) by a game. Kara Hughey and Callie Sandusky paced Highland with 16 points while Shyan Womack had 10, Sierra Allen nine, Lora Stewart five, Katy Fullwood four and Jessica McCain two.
Ira held a narrow 9-8 lead after one quarter, but Highland used a 22-7 run in the second stanza to lead 30-16 at halftime and was up 41-23 entering the fourth period. Both of Highland’s teams will return to play at the Grady tournament Dec. 28-29 and the Highland boys start district Dec. 31 by hosting Ira. Two other Nolan County teams, Roscoe’s girls and boys, also see action again Dec. 28-29 at a tournament in Sterling City. Meanwhile, the Blackwell boys (5-8, 0-1) lost to Robert Lee 46-37 Monday to start district. The Hornets got 19 points from Caleb Magness, nine from Caleb Jeter, four from Brandon Elliott and Mason Magness and two from Jayden Jones.
